Umut Tarlaları (Fields of Hope) is the world's first "farming simulation" computer game produced. The game, which was published by SiliconWorx in 1993, is of the "system strategy games" genre (debates still going on about the term) and to this day, has been humbly carrying the title: "Best Game of the Universe" in its ever modest fashion.

The core of the game stands on the management of a farm. The main farming areas of raising various crops on plantations, cattle and poultry production and greenhousing, grows and improves over time and transforms into a large, industrial farming enterprise.

The player begins the game selling his hard-worked milk, eggs and vegetables in local town markets and eventually (hopefully) prospers; expands his farm in order to meet the accelerating demands of large factories, starts to employ qualified personnel and grows into a leading establishment in the farming sector.

But, of course, as in every other "system strategy" game (?), the goal is not always so clear. The game not only supports large livestock companies, selling thousands of chicken a month and breeding large numbers of cattle on endless pastures; cereal industry giants planting crops on huge plantations and pioneering the greenhousing sector; but also gives way for the story of a wretched farmer who scrambles to raise beetroot in a tiny, 10 acres of barren field. Both the selling of tons of eggs and milk to SEK (Collective Milk Foundation) each month and the misery of strolling around town markets is comprised in the fun concept of the game.

Additionally, the 80 AI supported and potential 2 human rivals add to the competition and momentum throughout the game.

In each new game, all these and more depends on the economical, geographical and climatological conditions of the reconstructed game world and most importantly, the dream-farm of the particular player. The amplitude of the concept of "winning" in the game gives way for the player to determine his own personal goals for each new beginning.

A Happy Family

In fact, the power which carried Fields of Hope to its outgoing fame in Turkey is this insight of flexibility. The game, which reached a considerable fame and success in the ancient 1993 Amiga games market, despite its technological inadequacies against modern-day computer gaming monsters, is still a charming nostalgia that is occasionally played and celebrated by many dedicated fans. That is because, the game itself, among the computer gaming giants of the modern times, is that miserable, wretched, poor-but-happy farmer, struggling desperately to raise those beetroots in that 10 acres of a barren land.

The new version of the game, compatible with the modern day computer gaming concepts, has been initiated in 1997 by SiliconWorx and Compuphiliacs, but has been shelved after the completion of the pre-design stage. But of course, crackpot decisions and loony dashes is ever present in the dotty heart of the game designer.

Fields of Hope Part 2: "Revenge of the Farmer" is still there, lurking in gloomy shadows, waiting for an unexpected descend on the unfortunate, unwary player.

Running Umut Tarlaları on WinUAE

Note: If sound problems occur, try setting Host->Display->Full Screen. Also the emulation is CPU intensive, so you might need to increase Host->Priority settings.

Good luck...
